Providing you the opportunity to align your financial life with your real life goals.

The first steps to any plan are to determine your destination and starting place.  Independent Financial Planning will help you determine what is important to you, if you haven't done so already, and help you make a plan to achieve those goals based upon your current financial situation.  Too often, investors are discouraged by feeling like they need to have everything together before you can even start the process of planning.  That is not the case and be encouraged: no matter your starting point, I can help you make a plan to take you from what will likely happen to a preferred outcome, a preferred future.  And we do it together.  "You must know your destination port if you wish to catch a favorable wind."  Are you ready to sail your financial ship?  Find out how I can help.

Ready to take the next step? You can start now to chart your course to do what is important to you.

Who We are

Daniel Morgan, CFP ®

Daniel Morgan, CFP®

Daniel Morgan founded Independent Financial Planning, LLC in January, 2015.  He specializes in identifying solutions to address the unique goals and challenges facing investors.  He uses comprehensive financial planning techniques for solutions to retirement, college, withdrawal, and philanthropic planning.

Prior to opening his own firm, Daniel spent four years with Reston Wealth Management as a wealth advisor and financial planner.  He began his career in financial management with Smith Barney as a part of the Commonwealth Group where he specialized in portfolio design and implementation.

Daniel received his degree from the University of Virginia in 2004, and in 2014, earned the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation. A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional is an individual who has a demonstrated level of financial planning technical knowledge, experience in the field and holds to a fiduciary standard.

Daniel also sits on the board of Embrace Loudoun, a 501c3 non-profit organization that focuses on community development in Loudoun County, Virginia and the surrounds by creating caring connections that change the lives of under-resourced in the community.

What is the proper portfolio construction and which account structures should you use?  Your goals will determine the path you take to make your investments work for you.  It is truly different for everybody.

Maintain a fiduciary standard.  A fiduciary is required by law to give advice that is in the best interest of the client without any regard to financial compensation. Independent Financial Planning's service always has been and always will be about putting the client first. Whether or not your advisor is a fiduciary in many cases depends on the kinds of products they are selling and their employment. For instance, fee-based or fee-only advisors are often acting with the duty of a fiduciary. Whereas a commission-based advisor or insurance-based advisor are mostly not acting as a fiduciary. Additionally, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professionals abide by the fiduciary standard of conduct in regard to financial planning or the material elements of financial planning.

My investing philosophy is consistent with the concepts of Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) that a collection of diversified investments with different characteristics and performance profiles will provide the optimal portfolio.  This means that for each individual your portfolio will be unique to your needs and goals but every portfolio will be diversified.  In some instances this includes investments outside of the traditional stocks and bonds to seek a truly different kind of opportunity set.  In other cases clients can achieve diversification within the traditional investment universe.  One feature all of my clients will have in their portfolios is global exposure.  I recommend any investor consider these two things, 1) invest for the long run and 2) be diversified.

There are many tools that Independent Financial Planning uses to help you meet your goals.  Tools are helpful, but the important part is knowing you've been heard and that the recommendations are born out of a thorough understanding of what is important to you.

Goal planning software

Independent Financial Planning has a variety of software capabilities including this one by Advisor Software Inc. that I can use to determine what financial costs are required to meet your specific goals.  One unique element to the program below is that it incorporates actuarial tables for benefits calculations, which helps better estimate future benefits from pensions, like social security.

Portfolio comparison Reports

Morningstar Office provides a number of reports to compare investments within portfolios, analyze stocks, mutual funds, and other investment products; including this "Current vs Model Portfolio" report below.

Social Security and Pension Analysis

Social Security has complicated rules and formulas to determine benefits.  You probably don't need to know the details of how this works, only that I can help you find the best option given your unique circumstances.  The social security analysis report below is a tool produced by Social Security Explorer and is one of many helpful reports Independent Financial Planning uses in retirement planning.

Comprehensive financial planning sounds so daunting but it really is the process of determining what is important to you and aligning your financial life to prioritize what is important.  Starting with discovery, knowing you and your goals, together we chart a course that will be refreshed as needed.  What is important to you and how does your money help you accomplish what is important?

Financial planning starts with an accurate understanding of your current situation and a detailed understanding of your goals.  From there, we build your family's cash flow statement and balance sheet, provide a retirement snapshot based on your projected savings and retirement expenses, and detail the cost of each of your goals.  The final product is a physical report with specific recommendations on how best to achieve your goals and what structure and process you should use to make the most of your savings and future cash flow.
